About
This website is dedicated to fine atlases, published in Europe from 1789, the year of the French Revolution, till 1989, the year of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.
Two centuries of unprecedented worldwide economic growth and prosperity, made possible by human ingenuity and creativity. Unfortunately, also 200 years of devastating wars, genocides, oppression, plundering of the Earth and maltreatment of Nature.
It is very rewarding knowing more about these atlases. The appreciation of the
techniques and methods used at the time, both cartographic and printing. The pure beauty of maps as a graphic mode of visualising. The insights one can gain how atlas maps can represent a certain social and (geo)political Zeitgeist.
In short, these atlases are telling history.
